Stage One: The Story Often Comes Before the Script

Before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set, somebody has already chosen which story is worth the bet. Following a few hits backward often reveals a book at the start of the process. ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance constructed around a secret child, is adapted from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. A novel by Cora Reilly is the basis of Bound by Honor, which ReelShort launched on November 1, 2025, as a mafia arranged-marriage series. A web novel and webtoon underpin Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. Several app owners also run reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Holywater operates Connor Reed: The Most Powerful Arms Dealer short drama the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Writers lean on tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama where no book exists. Squeezing a long drama story into scenes that each deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds is the script’s task.

Stage Two: Casting Known Faces

The format’s economics show up on screen at the casting stage. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep repeating the same names. Noah Fearnley came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star, after fronting ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024. In 2025, Rosa Singerman led two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. A series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, so a lead arriving at the next title with a following from one app enjoys a head start that matters a great deal. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so producers are also casting with a particular viewer in mind.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Filmed in About Eight Days

According to TheWrap, a Western short drama typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is placed at $150,000 to $250,000. Run the numbers and a 70-episode series shot in eight days works out to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling abroad report leaner numbers still: Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Per finished episode, that equals roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also said about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations, while 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Cutting to 60–100 Seconds

The footage gets cut into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room, each framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is structured around a question the next episode promises to answer. The mechanism that pulls you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, and it is the house style. Pieced together, those slivers make a 70-episode series roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen shows 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return shows 100 episodes; episode counts vary widely by title. Viewers who never open the app can still watch the same footage, because ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Editors are, in other words, cutting video dramas for multiple screens at the same time.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

The last creative call doubles as a commercial one. In the standard model outlined by TheWrap, the first eight to ten episodes are free. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Once the free run ends, coins unlock the episodes, at a standard cost of about 60 coins per episode according to ReelShort’s blog. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews on its own, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Since prices differ by country, platform and promotion, your store may show a different figure. The controversial part is placement: paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, alongside auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Made Series

At the most recent production stage, the camera drops out entirely. ReelShort now hosts animated motion comics alongside its live-action catalogue. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic that lists no cast; it follows heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series has the same title, and the two should not be confused. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, so the app has gone the furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Steps Onto the Line

Fox Entertainment is the clearest example of traditional studios paying attention. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, accepted an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. That a network-scale producer is committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Glance

Laying the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is built around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. The edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall, casting leans on familiar faces, and scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. Although fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. Typical time and cost at each stage are summarized in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. Instead of guessing, it says so where no reliable figure has been published.

Stage Usual time / cost What happens
Source material and script No public figure A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel
Cast selection No public number Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step
Shoot 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are shot for a vertical frame
Edit Episodes of 60–100 seconds The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
